Abstract
The object of this study was to observe the effect of behavior art therapy using fairy tales with pictures on the self-expression of children with intellectual disabilities. The subject of the study was one male child with intellectual disabilities grade 2 who is in elementary school. The art therapy program was implemented once a week, 80 minutes in each session and total 20 times. For the effect calculation of the study, we used a self-expression scale and art self-expression evaluation before and after implementing the program.
According to the study result, firstly, it showed that behavior art therapy using fairy tales with pictures has a positive effect on the self-expression of children with intellectual disabilities. There was a pre and post score increase in the self-expression subdomain and also an expansion of self-expression in their works as their negative self-expression was improved. Secondly, behavior art therapy using fairy tales with pictures has a gradual effect on the process change of self-expression of child with intellectual disabilities. In conclusion, considering the above results, it was hard to make a generalization as it was a single case study but we could realize that children with intellectual disabilities who need a lot of repetition and learning are able to use the medium freely and not only as a learning process through 20 times of behavior art therapy using fairy tales and also realized that it has a positive effect on their self-expression.
